If you're interested in pursuing a career in automotive, consider taking classes at community colleges and universities. Many schools offer programs designed specifically for students interested auto repair, sales, and customer services.

Mechanical engineering is a good choice if you are interested in pursuing a degree. It's possible to get a bachelor's degree in just four years.

Many companies will also hire graduates right out of school. It's a smart idea to begin looking for work while you have the opportunity to study part-time.

After you complete your education, you may need to undergo some type of training before you can become an automotive technician.

This means you'll need to pass exams such as the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam. This test covers topics like engine maintenance, brakes system, suspension, and many other subjects.

Once you have passed the ASE Test, you are eligible to apply for a National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence License.

A license allows you to perform repairs on vehicles owned by private individuals. Based on the services rendered, you will receive compensation.

It's important to note that not all states require licensing. However, licensing is required for anyone who plans to work outside the home state.

Some states won't issue licenses until you have completed a certain amount training. If this is you, you may need another option.

What kind of car mechanic jobs exists?

Three main areas of employment are available for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

It's where most people start to think about becoming a mechanic. It's actually the easiest way to start. You can either work at a shop owned by someone else or set up your own business.

If you decide to work at a shop, you'll need to apply to join a union. After being accepted into the union, the union will provide training.

Once you complete the training, it's time to get started.

Register with the government if you want to open your garage. You'll need to meet certain standards after you register.

After you have registered, you will be issued a license to operate your garage.

You can sell spare parts or do minor repairs with your license. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

You will be expected to sell spare parts and also offer guidance and advice to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who specialize in one area of the car. For instance, they may only be qualified to fix brakes or change tires.

Some dealers also have general mechanics that can handle all aspects.

These positions often require applicants to undergo specific training before being allowed to work. This allows employers to select the most qualified candidates for their roles.

Some dealerships recruit students right out of school. These graduates are already familiar with basic mechanics and can therefore learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages are not associated with any one dealership. Instead, they tend to focus on providing high-quality service.

Independent garages are not associated with any companies so they can afford higher wages. These jobs generally pay better than those at dealerships.

However, independent garages may not be better places to work. Many owners prefer to control their businesses themselves, rather than delegating it to employees.

So you may find yourself working long hours without having any say over what happens during the day.

It is also possible to expect lower wages than you would if working at a dealer.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

Alternativly, you can apply directly to the garage owner if you are interested in working at an independent garage.

The bad news is that finding a new job isn't always easy. There are many factors that affect how much you make.

This could include the type of vehicle that you are working on and whether or not you charge an additional for labor.

Does it really matter what college I choose?

No, not really. There is no difference between colleges in terms of how to get into the automobile industry. But, there are better programs at some schools than others. Look elsewhere if you want something more niche.

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

An automotive technician is responsible for vehicle maintenance and repair. He/she can be found at auto shops, garages and service centers. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

To become an automotive technician, a person must first earn an associate's degree from a vocational college. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands in for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two sections to the ASE certification test. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. To pass the test, you will need to visit an authorized testing location. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. It varies depending on the location of the applicant. For example, some states require candidates to attend a training course, while others allow them to study independently. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

Apply to your local dealership to become an automotive technician. New employees are usually apprentices when they first get hired. Apprenticeships typically last three years. The apprenticeship program teaches students how to change oil, adjust brakes, replace tires, clean spark plugs, inspect engine compartments, and perform routine maintenance. Some students will learn advanced repair techniques, such as changing shocks, installing air filters, and replacing engines. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. However, some schools offer evening classes if needed.

Once a student completes his/her apprenticeship, he/she becomes a journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. You will also learn how to repair complicated electrical components, as well as how to remanufacture engines and rebuild transmissions. Many employers prefer hiring journeymen because they know the job well and understand what the customer expects.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were almost 1.7 million available jobs in the automotive mechanic field in 2010. This number was expected increase 18% between 2009 - 2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. An individual with a high school diploma can earn about $21,000 per annum. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. Technicians with a bachelor’s degree made about $27,000 annually. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year.
