FAQ

What is the difference in a mechanic and an auto technician?

These two jobs are very similar but not identical. A mechanic repairs cars and an automotive technician performs maintenance.

A mechanic must have good manual dexterity and be able to perform simple tasks quickly. They should be able to accurately diagnose problems and repair them efficiently.

A technician in automotive is more technical than a mechanic. They must be able and able to read blueprints as well as use tools like drills or wrenches.

They must be able and competent to safely perform complicated procedures. They must also be familiarized in different types and electrical systems.

They should also be able understand how different parts interact.

The result is that a mechanic often earns less than an auto technician. Both jobs offer many possibilities.

Do I need to have a degree to work as an automotive mechanic? Can I study part-time?

Although it's not mandatory, a degree can help. Employers are more likely to hire candidates who have completed a complete degree. It shows you are dedicated and have worked hard to achieve your goals.

It doesn't mean that you can't work while you study. Some universities allow students to complete coursework over the summer holidays and finish their studies later in the year. Other universities permit students to take classes part-time during the school year.

Is it important which college I go?

You're wrong. There's no difference between colleges regarding getting into the automotive industry. However, some schools offer better programs than others so if you're looking for something more specialized, look elsewhere.

What qualifications are required to become a mechanic

To become a technician, you will need to pass a series exams. These include:

  • A general knowledge assessment
  • A practical examination
  • An apprenticeship test

These tests will ensure you are familiar with the fundamental concepts of mechanics and physics before starting to work as a mechanic.

These tests will allow you to be a mechanic once you have passed them. You will still need to complete an apprenticeship. This will involve training in the trade.

To fully understand the mechanics of vehicle repairs, you'll need workshops and classes. It will be necessary to work alongside experienced mechanics.

For mechanic success, you'll need to be focused and meticulous. Repairs to vehicles require you to pay attention to every detail.

To be a successful mechanic, patience and perseverance are essential. If you don't like to follow instructions, then this may not be the right career path for you.

But if you love cars and enjoy fixing them, you could be very happy in this line of work.

Is it difficult to find a job as a mechanic in the automotive industry?

Yes, it's possible. Many garages have vacancies that are advertised online. Many people apply because they think it will be fun. Applying for several positions and seeing if they accept student applications is a good way to get your foot into the door. Ask your friends and family to recommend anyone in the field. They might be happy to recommend someone.

How To

How to be an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. He/she repairs cars, trucks, motorbikes and snowmobiles for customers. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Two sections make up the ASE certification examination. The first section tests the ability to use mechanical knowledge. The second section tests the ability to apply practical skills. To pass the test, you will need to visit an authorized testing location. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeships typically last three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Some students learn how to do advanced repairs, such as installing air filters, replacing shocks, repairing engines, and replacing transmission fluids. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

Once a student completes his/her apprenticeship, he/she becomes a journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were almost 1.7 million available jobs in the automotive mechanic field in 2010. This figure is expected to rise 18 percent between 2009-2020. When a candidate plans to open his/her own shop he/she should be ready to invest thousands of dollars in equipment.

The salary for an automotive technician depends on several factors, including the type of employer, location, education level, and experience. A jobless person could make an average of $20,000 annually. Someone with only a high school diploma could earn around $21,000 per year. Earnings for those with an associate's diploma are approximately $24,000/year. Technicians with a bachelor's degree earn about $27,000 per annum. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. Salaries are increasing so that a professional earning less than $30,000 could expect to make $40,000 in a few years.
